Finn Bálor has brought his acclaimed talents to NXT, which can only mean one thing for his foes inside the yellow ropes: pain.
A star in his homeland of Ireland, the United Kingdom and beyond, Bálor came up through the notoriously tough Japanese dojo systems, where he mastered hard, lightning-quick kicks and vicious submission holds. Upon arriving in NXT in late 2014, the proud Irishman chose to honor his heritage by taking on the names of two enduring Irish myths — the warrior Finn McCool and Balor, the king of the Fomorians who could cause wanton destruction simply by opening his fearsome eye.
Bálor caused destruction of another kind when he and Hideo Itami took on The Ascension at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution. Entering the contest wearing awe-inspiring body paint — war paint that Balor still applies prior to his toughest challenges — Bálor showed off a more intense side of himself as he and his partner dismantled the dominant former NXT Tag Team Champions.
The enigmatic Superstar soon fought his way to the NXT Title, winning the prestigious championship from Kevin Owens in a WWE Network special that aired live on July 4, 2015, from Tokyo. His accolades haven’t ended there, either; at NXT TakeOver: Respect, Bálor teamed with Samoa Joe to win the inaugural Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Cup, overcoming Baron Corbin & Rhyno in the tournament finals. As 2015 came to a close, the NXT Universe voiced its opinion of their fighting champion, naming Bálor the Overall Competitor of the Year, as well as the Male Competitor of the Year.
Whether Finn Bálor can reclaim the NXT Championship from Samoa Joe remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: The future starts with him.
